What is Scalp Micropigmentation?
Scalp Stippling, also known as Hair Follicle Restoration & Scalp Micropigmentation, is a permanent cosmetics procedure for men & women with hair loss, visible scars from a hair transplant procedure or as an alternative to hair transplants all together. It is also used to give Alopecia sufferers back something that was once theirs, a perfectly quafted look of a full head of hair.
This procedure has gained popularity over the years because of it’s cost effectiveness, minimum down-time and realistic outcome. With this procedure, scalp micropigmentation covers bald areas by imitating hair stubble. It is also fantastic for men and women with a longer hair style but are thinning because it gives the look of thicker/denser hair at the root. Some patients combine scalp stippling with hair transplantation. This creates the appearance of hair density far greater than that possible with the hair transplant procedure alone. This is particularly important in cases when the number of hair follicles available for transplantation is very limited.
Scalp Micropigmentation For Men
Far and away scalp micropigmentation is the best solution in the world right now for male hair loss. No matter what you call it no matter what the reason for the hair loss.
If you’re considering options like hair restoration surgery, hair piece systems or concealers, stop and think for a moment. Do you really want a lifetime of worrying about how your transplant is holding up, or when you’ll need your next one? You want to rely on temporary cover-ups that you glue, clip, tape or shake on to your head? Did you know that some prescription hair loss medications can have adverse sexual side effects? Scalp micropigmentation offers a stylish, modern look without any of the drawbacks of these other options.
Scalp Micropigmentation For Women
About a quarter of my clients are women who are dealing with hair loss. This can include overall thinning or more aggressive forms such as alopecia areata. Female hair loss can be due to menopause, hereditary causes, or a condition known as telogen effluvium that usually follows a physical or emotional trauma, for example childbirth or a bereavement.
Scalp micropigmentation not only gives the illusion of a full head of hair, but it actually stimulates new growth. The repetition of insertions to the dermal layer of skin has been known to stimulate hair follicles.
Scalp micropigmentation, otherwise known as SMP, is perfect for women who are thinning on the top and crown area of their head.
We have seen this procedure change the process of men and women’s lives. This procedure starts with no warning and usually happens to people without being hereditary bald. Some people will get this periodically throughout their life, some will lose all hair, including eyebrows or patches forever.
At Scalp Solutions Kentucky, we take great joy is performing our procedure on men and women with alopecia. We go over native hair as if it wasn’t there, knowing and planning for the fact that these follicles may fall out as well at some point in the future. In other words, we would usually treat your entire scalp, including the areas where you still have hair.
The benefit of this approach is two-fold – your current alopecia symptoms are completely hidden, and you also have peace of mind in knowing that if the patches do change shape or size, or even shift position, you’re still good to go.
This procedure sometimes may take up to 4 treatments to get the total look the client wants to achieve. The results are incredible, and the looks on our clients faces are extremely rewarding.

Combining Scalp Micropigmentation With A Hair Transplant
It’s almost like getting the best of both worlds. The texture that only real hair can give with illusion of amazing density no matter how much donor hair you have.
Scalp Micropigmentation combined with Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) (The FUT process involves removing a strip of tissue from the back of the head, from which the donor hair follicles will be extracted.)
Scalp Micropigmentation with Follicular Unit Extractions (FUE)
(The FUE process involves the harvesting of individual hair grafts from the donor area. A circular punch is made in the skin around the upper part of the follicle from the back of the scalp. The location of the donor area lies in the permanent hair zone. It is gently extracted from the scalp and a small hole remains for a few days. The hair follicle is then positioned into the destination area.) Again combined with the density that SMP can provide makes combining procedures a winning formula for a growing number of Scalp Solutions Kentucky customers.
Why A Combination Procedure?
Scalp micropigmentation on its own isn’t for everyone. What some people really want is real hair, and SMP cannot provide that. Unfortunately many of these people make poor hair transplant candidates as they have already lost a lot of hair, and therefore have a sparse donor supply. This is where a combination can provide the answer.
For those who have lost a lot of hair already, a hair transplant procedure can be used to add texture to a scalp micropigmentation treatment, provided the hair is kept at a shaved length. This means that whilst SMP provides the illusion of full density, the transplanted hair provides real ‘feel’ and texture, and a 3D effect to the overall appearance.
For customers who still have a significant amount of real hair left, it may be possible for them to keep their hair at a longer length and use SMP as a ‘filler’. This is ideal for hair transplant patients who were unable to achieve the desired density of hair following their procedure. This is especially common behind the hairline and back to the crown, as the distribution of donor hair is often prioritized around the frontal hairline.
What Are Some Of The Causes Of Bad Procedure?
Inexperienced providers and their technicians can obviously make a range of different mistakes during a procedure, but there are three serious errors that keep turning up time & time again. The wrong pigments, applied to the scalp, using the wrong needle size at the wrong penetration depth.
The problem is that these companies try to base their version of SMP on a tattooing technique, or a permanent makeup technique. So they buy tattoo ink, then use the same process to apply the pigment to the scalp. This does NOT work. Why? Because these pigments made up of many constituent colors including blue, green & purple. The color will look good at first, but over a three week period your head will start to change color as it softens. Those undertones will start to show and you will end up looking like you have a blue head. Permanent cosmetics colors have a similar problem as they are compiled of your primary colors which are red, yellow & blue. Your scalp procedure will look great at first but over a year or two the weaker colors start to fade leaving the scalp with either a salmon or greenish hue. The other issue is dot size. By depositing the ink too deeply, as almost all inexperienced technicians do, you will end up with huge dots all over your head.
The ink that is used here at Scalp Solutions Kentucky will never turn colors. This is because we only use the highest quality, pigments with no constituent colors. No blue no green, no red, no yellow. Just the highest quality organic carbon based ink! Put to the test by the worlds finest SMP artists and pigment manufacturers. When you have SMP at Scalp Solutions Kentucky, just know you are in the hands of someone who cares about your satisfaction.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How many treatments should I expect?
Scalp micropigmentation should never be considered a 1 treatment process. Most clients can expect between 2-4 sessions to complete their treatment depending on the extent of hair loss or scarring.
Is it detectable?
Scalp micropigmentation has become such an effective hair loss solution because of its consistently natural and undetectable results. Theresa Judd prides herself on the ability to seamlessly replicate each individual hair follicle to create a perfect match for each client.
How long do the results last?
After completion of your treatment (2-4 sessions) a client should expect the strength of the color to last for many years. Over a longer term, a client will very gradually begin to notice slight lightening (not discolor) of the treatment. When this occurs they can undergo a brief “touch up” session to restore any fading and secure many more years of their style.
Will it change colors like tattoo?
No. Scalp micropigmentation is a form of permanent cosmetics, but unlike tattooing or permanent makeup, the pigments used are designed to fall within the same color spectrum of short cut hair. The pigment contains no additional colorants or additives and will only lighten, not discolor over an extended time.
Scalp micropigmentation also utilizes different equipment than traditional tattooing, ensuring the needle and machine are designed specifically for micropigmentation of the scalp.
How do I choose a hairline?
If you are unsure of what style or type of hairline will work for you, your treatment specialist will be there to help. With artistic experience on how to fit a hairline to head shape and age, your specialist can help recommend what’s best. Over the course of your sessions you can also tweak and adjust the hairline for a perfect result.
Can scalp micropigmentation camouflage my transplant scar?
Yes! By replicating tiny hair follicles inside the scarred area and blending the color around the scarring area, transplant and surgical scars can see massive improvement in concealment.
